Carole Hopson’s novel, A Pair of Wings, is inspired by the true story of Bessie Coleman, a pioneering Black aviatrix. It follows her journey from working in Texas cotton fields to becoming the celebrated “Queen Bess,” who earned her pilot’s license in Europe after being denied the chance to fly in the U.S. The book explores how she found freedom in the air while grappling with challenges on the ground.
