8/5: New Section on Lyceum – Community Expectations, Resources, and Supports Pt 2
Tuesday, August 5, 2025
Hello Class of 2029 and new transfer students,
Today a new section of your Summer Resources Lyceum page opens to you. This section contains information and videos about “Community Exploration, Expectations, and Supports at Bates.” This is Part 2 of coverage on this topic. Part 1 opened to you on July 22, 2025. To access Lyceum please go to the Quad and click on the button labeled “Lyceum”. You may access the section directly here.
Please be sure to engage with all of the information at your Summer Resources Lyceum page, which you have had access to since June 3, 2025, BEFORE you arrive at Bates later this month.
As our college’s mission statement makes clear, Bates is “a collaborative residential community.” Therefore, we have certain responsibilities toward ourselves and others to promote health, wellness, communication, respect, and love. Only then can we realize our aim of “cultivating intellectual discovery and informed civic action.”
This section of your Summer Resources provides information on a range of community resources including the Harward Center for Community Engagement and our Center for Purposeful Work. The Harward Center works to weave together campus and community for the enrichment of both student learning and public life. And, the Center for Purposeful Work partners with students throughout their time at Bates to help them discover how to link their academic interests with their career aspirations; it offers a range of support services including resume construction, job shadows, internship support and more. Resources in this section will help you learn more about these two important resources, which are central to the Bates experience.
The section also contains reminders for you to engage with 3 important resources that will be sent to you via email in the coming weeks. These are:
- Support | Action | Accountability Workshop
- Well-Being at Bates Orientation Part 1
- Introduction to Residence Life at Bates
- Please engage with the “Support | Action | Accountability” Workshop. The workshop is accessible as part of your First-Year Forms on Garnet Gateway. As a reminder, to access Garnet Gateway, simply go to www.bates.edu/quad and click on “Log in to Garnet Gateway,” and then enter your credentials. The “Support | Action | Accountability” Workshop opened to you on August 4, 2025. Please engage with it no later than August 22, 2025. The material in the workshop will be discussed at an in-person session of New Student Orientation on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
- As encouraging health and well-being is central to Bates’ history and mission, we also ask that you complete the Well-Being at Bates Orientation Part 1: Preparing for your College Experience. There is a reminder to complete this workshop as part of this section of your Summer Resources Lyceum page. This workshop usually takes about 90 minutes. It is best experienced in one sitting, so please set this time aside to complete it. You will receive access to the workshop on or near August 11 in your Bates email. Please complete the workshop prior to your arrival to campus.
- You are also asked to complete the Res Life @ Bates Workshop, which offers the opportunity to take this time to reflect on your values and what it means to be a part of a community. This workshop should take about 30 minutes to complete and is best experienced in one sitting. You will receive access to the Res Life @ Bates workshop on or near August 6 in your Bates email. Please complete the workshop prior to your arrival to campus.
