Behind the Beautiful Forevers

MOSAIC Book Club will be discussing Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo starting February 4, 2026.

The first MOSAIC Bookclub selection is Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo! In this National Book Award winner, Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo chronicles the lives of families striving for a better future in Annawadi, a settlement in the shadow of Mumbai’s luxury hotels. Through the stories of residents like Abdul, a resourceful scavenger, and Asha, an ambitious mother, Boo reveals the heartbreaking reality of systemic inequality and the staggering resilience of the human spirit. It is a powerful, unforgettable account of hope and survival in a hidden world.

The MOSAIC Book Club provides an inclusive and affirming space for Bates alumni to engage in meaningful dialogue and lifelong learning. This club directly advances the mission of Bates Alumni MOSAIC by strengthening community among alumni of color, LGBTQIA+ alumni, first-generation alumni, international alumni, and those who support and identify with these experiences.

Through shared reading and intentional conversation, we explore diverse narratives, deepen our understanding of varied perspectives, and build lasting connections across the Bobcat network.

Who Can Join?

All Bates alumni who identify with or support the MOSAIC community are warmly welcome to participate.

How It Works
  • Virtual & Accessible: Sessions are held entirely online, making participation easy for alumni regardless of your location.
  • Format: Each cycle features one carefully selected book. Discussions are held bi-weekly and last approximately 60–90 minutes.
  • Discussion: Sessions include a welcome, optional icebreakers, and a group discussion guided by prompts shared in advance to ensure rich conversation. We utilize breakout rooms for smaller, focused reflections.

Registration is required for each book cycle. Upon registration, you will receive all meeting details, discussion materials, and access information.
