What to Bring

Overview

Each room is furnished with a bed, desk, desk chair, bureau, closet, wastebasket, Wi-Fi and ethernet. All beds are extra long twins, measuring 34 x 80 x 5.

Microwaves, refrigerators, and freezers

To conserve energy, microwaves are only allowed as part of a refrigerator/freezer/microwave combination unit, in which only one appliance can be run at a time. One unit is allowed per room, so you should coordinate this with your roommate(s). In no case may a refrigerator exceed 3.0 cu. ft or operate at more than 350 kWh. For rentals and deliverers, one option we suggest is New England Student Services.

Linens and Laundry

Laundry facilities are located in each building.  Washes are $1.25 per load; drying is $1 per load.  You’ll pay for laundry by loading up a MacGray card. The initial cost for this is $5 ($2 for the card and $3 credit toward machine use).  You can purchase or reload your card in $5 increments at MacGray machines located near the student mailboxes, in Ladd Library, Pettengill Hall and Hacker House.

While Bates does not contract with any specific laundry service, there are several available who will wash, fold, pick up and deliver to campus.

Shipping Instructions

To ship large packages via UPS, FedEx, USPS prior to your arrival (but not before August 1), please use the following address format:

In the event that someone requires a street address to mail a package or overnight letter to you, (Federal Express and UPS usually require a street address) the mailing address is:

When the package reaches Bates you will receive a yellow notice in your mailbox. You must bring the yellow notice and your ID to the Package Center in order to pick up your package.
